Florida’s most common variety of sea turtle is the loggerhead, which averages 200 to 250 pounds. Larger, endangered leatherbacks and green turtles nest in Florida in smaller numbers. Many factors work against endangered turtle populations, including loss of nesting habitat. Hatchlings, which use moonlight to navigate from the nest to the shore, can be misled by artificial lights.
