Make a Scene is the latest in a series of unexpected but rewarding endeavors. After co-founding a “shiny” Austin cupcake joint with one of my best buds in 2007, and a subsequent three-year stint in seminary, I teamed up with my friend and former professor, Daniel Wang, to take on a new challenge. The challenge? Focusing the endless creative potential of a laser cutter into a sustainable, scalable business. On the heels of an optimistic first go that ended largely in failure, and after months of tinkering with different ideas and materials, a shadow box I made for my niece one Christmas signaled fresh possibilities. I wondered, “Was there a way to incorporate the three-dimensional charm of a shadow box into a simpler product that could bring smiles to the masses?” After numerous iterations and countless hours of tweaking, Make a Scene 1.0 was ready to be paired and tested with some original artwork. Enter the uber-talented Tricia V., whose design of an Austin-themed card proved to be the perfect match. Now, with more than a dozen eye-catching designs (and many more to come), we’re just beginning to Make a Scene!
